ROBOTIC SURGERY
Robotic surgery utilises mechanical arms controlled by the surgeon, and means large incisions can be avoided, allowing for complex procedures to be minimally invasive.
WHAT IS ROBOTIC SURGERY
Dr Balalis performs robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi surgical system. This system is the most advanced robotic platform currently used for bariatric surgery in Australia.
Dr Balalis uses robotic surgery to perform for sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery and upper gastrointestinal operations, as well as reflux and hiatus hernia surgery. By utilising the da Vinci Xi surgical system, surgery is more precise, translating to improved outcomes for patients in Adelaide, South Australia.
The da Vinci robotic surgical system includes a 3D high-definition camera, mechanical arms with surgical instruments and a console that is operated by Dr Balalis. This console creates hand movements in real time with a greater range of motion and a magnification of 10 times, enabling more complex operations through smaller incisions.
An already experienced laparoscopic surgeon, Dr Balalis had previous experience with robotics in the UK, and felt it was a valuable way to to provide improved outcomes for patients.
To advance the use of robotic surgery in South Australia, Dr Balalis was recently awarded a prestigious travelling grant from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to visit the Netherlands.
What are the benefits of robot-assisted bariatric surgery?
– Greater surgical precision
– Increased range of motion
– Improved dexterity
– Enhanced visualisation
– Better access to the surgical area
– Less pain and blood loss
– Shorter hospital stays
Who is a candidate for robot-assisted bariatric surgery?
Any patient who is a candidate for bariatric surgery can have robot-assisted surgery, however for Dr Balalis to use the da Vinci Xi surgical system, patients need to be privately insured.
Is there a cost for robot-assisted surgery?
There may be an additional cost for the robotic technique, however this is generally offset by improved operative results, with better recovery and lower complication rates.
